Demand Better for Our Kids
Research shows that technology in classrooms is not only vastly less effective than non-tech instructional strategies, but also frequently causes harm by exposing children to inappropriate content, encouraging distraction and addiction, and leaking their private data.

Our Asks to SPS
Eliminate all student device use for PreK–2nd.
Replace 1:1 assigned devices in 3rd–8th with computer cart or lab model.
Disable student access to any generative AI tools, apps, websites, and software.
Block student access to all gaming, video-streaming, and social media on student devices.
Prohibit screen time from being used as a reward, incentive, or behavioral reinforcement for students.
Prohibit all student device use during passing periods, lunch, and recess.
Require all EdTech products to meet independent standards for efficacy, and to prove that any benefits outweigh potential risks.
Require all apps used for instruction or on school-issued devices to be ad-free.
Transparency in technology use in schools, both on student devices and in teacher-led instruction.
Require explicit parental consent for each app that collects data, per FTC guidelines on COPPA.
Create clear pathways for parents and students who wish to opt out of device-based instruction, without penalty or reprisal, providing low-tech alternatives.

How to Advocate for Change
Ultimately we are working towards change at the district level, to benefit all students in Seattle Public Schools. You can help us by signing petitions and contacting SPS decision makers about your concerns.
We are also supporting students more directly by connecting families at the same schools, and providing resources and templates to help opt students out of assigned devices or other student-facing tech.
