School Tech Policy Email Template

We are compiling data from Seattle Public Schools in early 2026. Please send the following questions to your school administrators and let us know what you find out.

Hi, Principal X,

Thank you for all the work you do behind the scenes, juggling the needs of so many, to keep our school a safe place for kids to learn and play! In this new era of 1:1 technology devices for students, parents are hoping to better understand the tech landscape our children are experiencing at school even as we navigate our own technology use at home. Can you please take a moment to answer the questions below to help parents understand what they can expect and/or any policies currently in place?

 1) Does our school have a list of approved apps used and accessible to students by grade? If so, what are the approved apps for each grade?

2) Are generative AI tools, such as Google Gemini or ChatGPT, accessible on student devices?

3) How do staff ensure that students don’t use other apps or devices unsafely? What types of settings, controls or monitoring are in place?

4) What are the guidelines for teachers around limits on screen time per day for each grade? e.g. : “1st graders should be on screens (including ipads, watching videos on the smart board, and any rewarded screen time) for no more than 30 minutes per day total.”

5) How do you communicate guidelines around technology use at our school to families?

Thank you so much for your time! I know you have a lot on your plate.

Warmly,

X
